Book A Free Consultation About FUE Hair Transplant What is an FUE hair transplant?FUE (follicular unit extraction) involves removing groups of healthy hair follicles from the donor area – usually the back or sides of the head – and reimplanting them into the bald or thinning areas you’ve identified. FUE can be used to restore hair on your scalp, beard area, eyebrows, and other areas that require hair restoration.Using the latest minimally invasive hair restoration techniques, we create natural hair transplant results with faster recovery times and minimal scarring. That means you can wear their hair as short as you want in future without displaying noticeable signs of hair transplant surgery.Restoring your hair with FUE can give you back your hairline and your confidence. Find out how the procedure works below. How does FUE hair transplant work?FUE surgery is performed under local anaesthetic. This ensures the procedure is as pain-free as possible. You can also take a sedative if you feel worried or tense.A tiny punch is used to extract groups of follicles, or hair grafts, from the safe donor area at the back or side of your head. The punch is 0.75-1mm in diameter, depending on your hair type and the skin in your donor area. It creates tiny wounds that heal quickly and leave virtually no scarring. The surgical team then implants the hair grafts into tiny incisions in your thinning areas, which are carefully designed for angulation, depth and hair direction, giving you a natural-looking result. Why choose an FUE hair transplant? FUE is the most popular hair transplant procedure for both men and women FUE leaves virtually no scarring, so you can crop your hair as short as you like Recovery is easier and faster than with FUT surgery, so you can get back to normal life quickly You’ll get full, natural-looking hair in as little as 6 months Surgery takes less than a day to complete At the Wimpole Clinic, we have an FUE success rate of 97-100%. See Our Clinic Locations FUE Works For FUE is suitable for all types of hair restoration surgery, including beards, eyebrows, and hair across your temples and crown. General FUE FAQs 1. Is FUE right for me? FUE is ideal for anyone seeking fast recovery, limited downtime, and minimal scarring. The lack of scarring makes it the best choice for anyone who wants to shave their head or wear shorter hairstyles after their transplant.FUT is normally the preferred option for people seeking an Afro hair transplant, as there’s a higher risk of damaging the grafts during the extraction process with FUE. FUT also works well for women and those with longer hair, since the scar will be hidden beneath your hair. 2. Does FUE hurt? Your scalp will be numbed throughout the procedure, so you should feel no more than a little discomfort. You’ll also be given mild painkillers to help you manage any post-surgery pain. Most patients report that the surgery is less painful than they anticipated. 3. When will I see results from FUE? You’ll see the shape of your enhanced hairline immediately. It then takes around 4-6 months to see sustained initial hair growth after FUE surgery. Most people see final results 12-18 months after surgery. Find out what growth to expect at each stage in our hair transplant timeline. 4. Are FUE hair transplants permanent? Yes. FUE hair transplants can give you lifelong results after just one procedure. You might also need to use ongoing hair loss treatments to reduce or prevent continuing native hair loss. 5. Can FUE achieve the same results as FUT? Yes. FUE hair transplants are just as successful as FUT hair transplants. Both procedures will enhance your hairline within a year to 18 months. 6. What type of hair loss can FUE treat? FUE is suitable for the most common types of hair loss: male pattern baldness and female pattern hair loss. It can also treat some other types of hair loss, though it’s not suitable for temporary alopecia or alopecia areata. Book A Free Consultation How much does FUE cost? Experienced surgeons can expect to see FUE graft survival rates of more than 90%.Learn more about the procedure in these FAQs. FUE Procedure FAQs 1. Can I design my own hairline? We work with all our patients to craft a natural, age-appropriate hairline that looks fantastic and makes you feel more confident. That means we’ll always take your desired look into account when designing your new hairline. But we’re also realistic about what’s achievable based on the extent of your hair loss and the amount of hair in your donor area. Aggressive or unrealistic hairline designs often result in disappointment, so we’ll always be upfront about what you can expect from your hair transplant. 2. How long does the FUE procedure take? In most cases, FUE surgery takes between 5 and 7 hours. The more grafts you need, the longer the procedure will take. FUE usually takes longer than FUT, but you’ll ultimately save time in the recovery period. 3. How long is the FUE recovery period? Most people can resume their normal activities around 5-7 days after FUE surgery. During this time, you’ll need to take a few days off work and avoid strenuous exercise. Learn more about recovering from a hair transplant. 4. Will I need to take time off work? Yes. To make sure your hair transplant is a success, you should take at least a couple of days off work to recover. If you’re feeling well, you can go back to work after 2-3 days. Learn more about returning to work after a hair transplant. 5. How many procedures will I need? 68% of those who have a hair transplant get the results they want after a single procedure. Other people may need two or even three hair transplants to achieve their desired look.If you’re having a hair transplant into scar tissue, you’re more likely to need multiple hair transplants. 6. Who will perform the FUE procedure? At the Wimpole Clinic, your procedure will be performed by a registered surgeon. They’ll be accompanied by a team of skilled technicians who will support them throughout the procedure. 7. Are there any side effects to FUE? The main side effects of FUE are swelling, itchiness, numbness, and slight soreness. These are usually mild and go away by themselves within a week or so. 8. Will I need to shave my head for FUE? Most FUE patients opt to shave their head in order to get the best results from FUE.If you don’t want to shave your head, we can offer a unique unshaven head technique (UFUE) that means you won’t need to shave your head beforehand. This approach has both pros and cons, so we recommend discussing your options with your surgeon. FUE is widely accessible, and it’s the right choice for many patients. But not everyone is eligible for FUE. You may want to consider other options if: You have patchy or temporary hair loss Conditions like alopecia areata and telogen effluvium aren’t normally treatable with a hair transplant. Your hair loss is active and you haven’t taken steps to stabilise it Medical therapies like finasteride and minoxidil may be needed to stabilise your hair loss prior to a transplant. People with Afro-textured hair FUT is often better suited for people with Afro-textured hair, as it’s less likely to cause graft damage during extraction. You have widespread hair loss and a high estimated graft count FUT is often preferred for harvesting high graft volumes, as it’s more efficient. Book a consultation to find out if you’re eligible for FUE and discuss alternative options. FUE Risks And Side EffectsMost FUE patients experience side effects in the first week or so after treatment. These include bleeding and oozing from the donor and recipient sites; facial swelling; pain and itchiness, and scabbing and crusting. These are normal, expected results of the procedure, and will subside within 7-14 days. You may also experience temporary hair shedding around 2-4 weeks post-procedure.Like all surgeries, FUE carries a small risk of infection and other complications. Signs that you may need medical attention include pain that gets worse instead of better; fever; wounds that aren’t healing as expected; and skin discolouration. If you experience any of these issues, seek advice from the clinic. Alternatives to FUE: FUT Hair Transplantation FUT is an alternative hair transplant method that offers excellent results that are comparable to FUE. FUT involves extracting a narrow strip of skin from the donor area, then dissecting it into individual grafts outside the body. The wound is closed with stitches, leaving a narrow linear scar in the donor area. The graft implantation method is the same as for FUE.While FUT is an older, slightly more invasive technique, it still has an important place for many patients. FUT is often used for harvesting large graft volumes, and may be preferred for patients with curly or coily hair, as it’s less likely to damage the hair grafts during extraction. Complementary therapies While FUE on its own can create outstanding results, many patients use additional therapies to maintain their native hair and accelerate the growth process. Here are some of the most effective complementary therapies for FUE. Medical therapy Finasteride and minoxidil are both licensed treatments for male pattern baldness, and can help stabilise hair loss before and after FUT surgery. Minoxidil is also suitable for female patients. PRP therapy PRP hair therapy involves injecting platelet-rich plasma from your blood into your scalp. This promotes cell proliferation in inactive follicles, which results in improved hair growth. Low level laser therapy Low level laser therapy involves stimulating follicle cell activity and scalp blood flow by directing low-powered lasers of specific wavelengths onto the scalp. What to expect & FUE results timeline Find out what to expect after FUE surgery in this week-by-week results timeline. Week 1 The first week of recovery is usually the trickiest. You may feel some discomfort as the anaesthetic wears off, and you’ll need to adjust to your new aftercare programme. If you follow the advice carefully, all the scabs should have formed by the end of the first week. Week 2 During week 2, you’ll focus on safely removing the scabs. This involves washing your hair regularly (following specific instructions) to moisten and lift your scabs without dislodging your grafts. In most cases, all scabs will be gone by the end of the second week, and you can get back to your normal routine. Week 3-4 The painful part is over! But you may now start to see an increase in hair shedding. While this can be worrying, it’s a normal part of the recovery process. Transplanted grafts start to shed their hairs to make way for new growth. Week 5-12 By now, your scalp has fully healed and hair shedding has started. The next few weeks should be fairly uneventful. Any redness will fade over time, leaving your hair looking much the same as it did before your hair transplant. Week 12-24 New growth will start to become visible around 3-6 months after your hair transplant. Your new hairline will slowly take shape over the following weeks and months. With regular haircuts, you can blend this new growth into your existing hair. Week 24-52 The first week of recovery is usually the trickiest. By the end of the year, you should have a good idea of your final results. At the Wimpole Clinic, we regularly review our patients’ results so we know whether you’re on track to achieve the outcome you hoped for.
