Book A Free Consultation About Crown Hair Transplants What is a crown hair transplant? Many men start to lose hair on the crown of their head as they get older. Along with temple hair loss, crown hair loss is a typical symptom of male pattern baldness — so it’s one of the most common areas to get a hair transplant.A crown hair transplant uses the FUE or FUT technique to restore the hair you’ve lost at the very top of the scalp. Both techniques are equally effective at restoring hair on the crown. If you’re feeling self-conscious about the bald spot on your crown, it may be time to consider a crown hair transplant. Read on to find out how this procedure works. How do crown hair transplants work?Crown hair transplants can be performed using FUE or FUT. The key difference between the techniques is how the hair grafts are removed. In FUE, each graft is extracted individually using a surgical tool known as a micro punch. In FUT, a strip of skin from the back of your head is removed, then cut into individual hair grafts. If you’re not sure which is the right option for you, read our comparison of FUE vs FUT.When the hair grafts have been prepared, the surgeon will make small incisions in your crown area and insert the grafts individually until the thinning area is covered. After a few months, these new hairs will start to grow, giving you fantastic coverage and newfound confidence.Should you have a hair transplant? We never pressure our patients into opting for surgery. Is FUT or FUE more effective for restoring crown hair? There’s no difference in the effectiveness of FUT and FUE for hair loss along your crown. FUT might be recommended over FUE if you have Afro-textured or tightly curled hair. FUT is often used for Afro hair transplants as there’s a lower risk of graft damage during extraction.FUT may also be recommended if you need a high volume hair transplant, as it’s a more efficient graft extraction method.Otherwise, the choice is yours. 2. Will it hurt to get a crown hair transplant? Any type of surgery can be painful, but we do everything we can to minimise your discomfort during and after the procedure. Local anaesthetic will be administered to make sure you don’t feel any pain throughout the surgery, and any post-surgery soreness can be managed with over-the-counter painkillers. 3. When will I see results after my crown hair transplant? Hair on your crown grows at the same rate as the rest of your hair, but due to a larger surface area that needs to be covered patients will find they will need to wait up to 18 months post surgery to see the full outcome of their treatment. Some patients start to see their results as little as 6 months after their crown hair transplant. Find out more in our hair transplant timeline. 4. Are crown hair transplants permanent? Yes! Like all hair transplants, crown hair restoration surgery will give you permanent results. To prevent future hair loss in this area, you may need to use minoxidil, finasteride, or another hair loss treatment alongside your transplant. Crown hair transplants usually require more grafts than hairline or temple hair transplants due to the surface area needs to be covered. Learn more about the cost of a crown hair transplant. See Our Prices The Procedure Crown hair transplant surgery is a popular procedure for men with advancing hair loss across the top and back of the head. Understand how crown hair transplants work in these procedure FAQs. Crown Procedure FAQs 1. Can I have a transplant for crown and temple hair loss at the same time? Yes. Most men start receding at the temples first, then go on to lose hair from the crown. But no matter what your hair loss pattern looks like, you can usually address the whole head in a single session. The only limitation is the number of healthy hair follicles available in your donor area. 2. How long will crown hair transplant surgery take? The length of your surgery depends on the extent of your hair loss. If you need more grafts, your procedure will take longer. But most patients spend around 6 hours in the chair, plus a few short breaks. Most hair transplants are completed within a day. 3. What can I expect during the recovery period? Hair transplant recovery usually takes no more than a couple of weeks, although some patients recover much more quickly. FUE patients typically return to their normal routine around 6 days after surgery. FUT recovery often takes longer (up to 2 weeks) as the donor area wound needs more time to heal. 4. Who will perform my crown hair transplant? A Wimpole Clinic surgeon will carry out your surgery, assisted by technicians who will support them (and you!) throughout the process. 6. What side effects can I expect? Itchiness, soreness, redness, and swelling — these are the typical side effects of hair transplant surgery. Most of the time, any side effects you experience will ease off after a few days. We’ll also give you painkillers and anti-swelling medication to help manage these symptoms. 7. I have crown hair loss due to alopecia areata. Can I have a hair transplant? Hair transplants aren’t usually recommended for alopecia areata patients. But there are plenty of other hair restoration options you can try, such as laser therapy for hair loss. Hayden Gribble's Crown Hair Transplant Review Five star experience from a good group of peopleFour months on from surgery and I am amazed at how well my new hair has grown so far. After a decade of using minoxidil to cover my thinning and receding hairline I decided to do some research on hair transplants as I didn’t think it was benefitting me anymore and like so many others I was reluctant to say goodbye to what I had, which was hair on the crown and top but going in the front. Luckily, after shopping around I came to the Wimpole clinic and spoke to Marie and Dr Sciacca who after a little time contemplating I felt comfortable going forward with the transplant.I was really nervous before the procedure but Marie and Dr Sciacca were brilliant throughout the entire thing, from consultation to after care. Their advice was clear and concise and I was encouraged to ask questions throughout every aspect of my journey and this left me feeling more than reassured, especially after the surgery whilst I recovered.I wasn’t ready to lose more hair and thanks to Wimpole I am very happy with how it is going and looking forward to seeing the finished results! While many people with crown hair loss are eligible for hair restoration surgery, not everyone is. You may not be eligible for a crown hair transplant if: You have patchy or temporary hair loss conditions Temporary hair loss conditions like alopecia areata and telogen effluvium will usually make you ineligible for a hair transplant. You have active native hair loss If you haven’t taken steps to stabilise your hair loss (such as medical therapies) you may be advised to use these for a few months before having surgery. You don’t have enough donor hair to cover the required area It’s important that you have realistic expectations of what a crown hair transplant can achieve. You’re not in good general health Your surgical team should judge that you're healthy enough to recover safely from the surgery. Book a consultation to find out if you’re eligible for a crown hair transplant. Crown transplant risks and side effectsCertain side effects are expected after a crown hair transplant. Most patients experience pain, itching, bleeding, swelling, and scabbing in the first week or so after their procedure. These side effects can normally be managed at home with over-the-counter painkillers and other first-line treatments. Some patients experience complications after a crown transplant, including infection. Fever, pain that’s getting worse, reopened stitches, or non-healing of the grafts may indicate a problem that needs medical attention, so seek advice from your clinic in these instances. Is FUE or FUT best for your crown? Both FUE and FUT can provide great coverage and density on the crown. Whether you opt for FUE or FUT depends on your unique circumstances, including the number of grafts you need, your donor hair availability, your hair texture, and any concerns around scarring.FUE surgery involves extracting grafts individually, so it leaves very little visible scarring. Any scars are normally covered by your remaining donor hair, even when it’s cropped short. In FUT, a strip of skin is removed from the donor area, then divided into individual grafts. The resulting wound is stitched together, leaving you with a thin scar that may be noticeable beneath short hair. Complementary therapies Crown hair loss responds particularly well to certain medical treatments, so you may want to use these to maintain your native hair and accelerate transplanted hair growth. Medical therapy Finasteride and minoxidil are licensed treatments for male pattern baldness. They can slow, stop, or even reverse hair loss, helping you maintain the surrounding native hair on your crown. PRP therapy In PRP hair therapy, platelet-rich plasma is extracted from a sample of your blood, then reinjected in and around your crown. This stimulates cell growth in inactive follicles, often leading to improved hair growth. Low level laser therapy This treatment promotes hair growth by using low level laser therapy to target the crown area, stimulating cell activity and blood flow to the follicles. Crown hair transplant results timeline Find out more about the journey from recovery to results after a crown transplant in this week-by-week timeline. Week 1 The most intense phase of recovery takes place the first week after your crown transplant. As well as getting plenty of rest, it’s important to follow your aftercare instructions carefully. This involves spraying your scalp with saline regularly, taking medication to manage side effects, and restricting certain activities. This will help your crown transplant heal quickly, so you can get back to normal as soon as possible. Week 2 During week two, you’ll start to wash your hair to encourage any scabs to fall off without dislodging your grafts. Safe scab removal is important at this stage, so it’s best to follow your clinic’s instructions for washing your hair. Most scabs will have gone by the end of the second week, and any stitches will also start to dissolve (alternatively, you may choose to have them removed at the clinic). Week 3-4 Most patients can start to resume their normal activities around now. When the pain has subsided and the scabs have mostly disappeared, you can start to get back to normality. Bear in mind that it’s normal to see your hair grafts start to shed their hairs around this time. The newly anchored follicles move into the shedding phase to make way for new growth. Week 5-12 Your crown should have completely healed by now, and you may find yourself looking for signs of growth. Density is still very limited at this stage, but it won’t be long before your new hairline starts to take shape. In the meantime, you may continue to see shedding from your transplanted grafts. Try not to worry, as this is very normal. Week 12-24 Visible crown hair growth starts around month three. From month three onwards, you may start to see promising signs of growth on your crown. While full density is still a bit of a way off, your hair coverage and length will gradually start increasing. Regular haircuts over this time can help your new growth blend seamlessly into your existing hair. Week 24-52 Crown hair growth continues over the first year, with final results visible from 12-18 months post-transplant. From six months onwards, your crown hair transplant will start to fill out. As coverage expands and density increases, you’ll find your hair is much thicker, with much less scalp visible through the hair. Wimpole Clinic patients are invited to regular checkups so we can track your growth over the first year.
